under the waves sensory bin

It's summer time, beach time, swimming in the sea time.

A  perfect time for a under the sea sensory bin.

ingredients:
white sand
abalone shell pieces
dark blue aquarium gravel
coral fish tank accessory
ocean toob
blue plastic jewels
green glass gems
clear glass gems
shells
and large gems with First Nations drawings of sea creatures

I'm quite proud of these.  I shrunk some First Nations images (commissioned by my school district for use with students) and modge podged them to the back of large glass gems.  It adds a element of local culture to the bin.

As usual, the kidlets bring ideas to the bin that I had not thought of.

Creating underwater mountains with hidden treasure at the bottom seemed popular.

And finding that hidden treasure.

hoping that you find some time to feel the sand between your toes

  1. Sandi,
I love it! I would like to play in that sensory bin! The idea of making the gems with the First Nation images on them is brilliant! What a great way to integrate local culture with an engaging hands-on activity!

    1. I think that there will be lots more gems with images on the back in our sensory bins. It is a way to introduce local culture into our classroom every day life.

  2. I'm now wondering if I could do a sensory bin with 2nd graders. What do you think? I love the idea of modge podgeing to the back of gems. What do I need to know in order to do this?

    1. I think second graders would love sensory bins. Our big buddies (grade 4 and 5) always play with it when they come to visit.
With older kids, they would be able to help with the planning and maybe even collecting things from home to put in it. A collective community effort.
Gems. I modge podged the back of the gem. Put on the paper. When it was dry, modge podged again. Done. Simple.
